Clare Baldwin Hawthorne

I work on the hard problems that emerge when engineering, finance, and executive leadership need to make decisions together. Most of my career has been spent understanding why those conversations break down, and how to fix them.

At Oscar Health and Datavant, I redesigned how technology organizations make capital decisions, built governance across 50+ engineering pods, and created the visibility that lets leaders make real trade-offs under constraint. Before that, I was an auditor at Ernst & Young. I’m a CPA and a Harvard MBA.

I now advise technology companies on scoped, time-bounded engagements when friction between functions carries financial, audit, or board-level consequences. I also write about what it takes to build things that matter, from the first messy phase through the part where it actually works. More on that soon.

Additionally, I serve on the junior board of Harlem Academy, an independent school committed to preparing scholars from underrepresented communities for success at top secondary schools and beyond.
